Low Testosterone, unlike menopause is rarely discussed. Low testosterone is a real issue impacting some men as they age. And, even though a man’s testosterone level will normally decreases with age, not all men require treatment. It is important to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare provider to determine what’s right for you.

There are sexual and non-sexual signs of low testosterone. Sexual signs include:

  • Low sex drive
  • Poor erections (weaker and fewer)
  • Wanting sex less often

Non sexual signs include:

  • Increase in body fat
  • Lower energy
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Feeling depressed
  • Anemia (low iron)
  • Loss of calcium from bone

Depending on your symptoms and blood profile, we may first recommend lifestyle changes; getting more exercise, eating healthfully, losing weight, and managing stress.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

In the event that lifestyle changes fail to improve symptoms, the next option may be testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). The result of TRT will bring testosterone levels back to normal and help improve signs and symptoms of low testosterone.

Testosterone replacement therapy is available in a variety of forms.

  • Gel applied topically to skin
  • Skin patches
  • Injections
  • Implants
  • Oral Tablet applied to gums
  • Do not attempt to treat Low T with over-the-counter supplements and herbal remedies. It is important that you leave the diagnosis and treatment of Low T to a medical experts. The symptoms of Low T are synonymous with many other conditions – some life threatening. The only way to be certain you have Low T is through a thorough exam and blood work.

Dr. Jed Kaminetsky, Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Medical Center and Board Certified Urologist, is a national leading authority on the treatment of Low T. Contact University Urology for your consultation to discuss your condition and determine if you require treatment for Low T.
